How to Measure Your Area
How to measure area for cubic yards: for any rectangular or near-rectangular area, you need three measurements — length, width, and depth. The cubic yard calculator handles this automatically once you give it the shape and the dimensions.
For an irregular area (a yard that's not a clean rectangle, a driveway with curves, a garden bed that wraps around a corner), the standard approach is to break the area into rectangles, measure each one, and add them up. This is called the sum-of-rectangles method, and it's what most landscape contractors and engineers do in the field.
How to measure a rectangle
- Pick the two longest sides of the area — those are your length and width
- Measure each at the longest point (don't follow the curve, measure the chord)
- Multiply length × width to get the area in square feet
- Decide on your depth (in inches)
- Area × depth (in feet) = cubic feet
- Cubic feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards
For a 20×30 ft driveway at 4 inches deep:
- Area = 20 × 30 = 600 ft²
- Volume = 600 × (4/12) = 200 ft³
- Cubic yards = 200 ÷ 27 = 7.41 yd³

How to break an irregular area into rectangles
For a yard or bed that's not a clean rectangle, draw a rough sketch (overhead view) and overlay rectangles until you've covered the whole area. Each rectangle gets its own length × width measurement. Add them up at the end.
Trick: over-measure, then subtract. If a section of your yard is roughly rectangular but has a curved edge or a corner cut out, measure the bounding rectangle and then subtract the cut-out section. The math is the same and the error is usually smaller than trying to measure the curve exactly.
Example: an L-shaped driveway

This is a 20×30 rectangle plus a 10×5 rectangle:
- 20 × 30 = 600 ft²
- 10 × 5 = 50 ft²
- Total = 650 ft²
At 4″ deep: 650 × 4 ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = 8.02 yd³ of gravel.
How to measure a circle
For a circular area (a round pool, a circular patio), measure the diameter — the longest distance across, passing through the center. The formula is:
- Area = π × (diameter / 2)² = π × radius²
For a 20 ft round pool: area = π × 10² = 314 ft². At 4″ deep: 314 × 4 ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = 3.88 yd³ of sand.

How to measure a triangle
For a triangular area (a wedge of yard, a triangular garden bed), measure the base and the height of the triangle:
- Area = (base × height) ÷ 2
For a 10×12 ft triangular bed: area = (10 × 12) ÷ 2 = 60 ft². At 3″ deep: 60 × 3 ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = 0.56 yd³ of mulch.
Common mistakes
- Measuring slope instead of horizontal distance: if your yard slopes, measure the horizontal distance, not the slope length. Cubic yards is a volume, not a surface area, and a 30° slope is 15% longer than the horizontal.
- Forgetting to add a buffer: a 20×30 area isn't exactly 20×30 — there's a foot or two of error in the measurement. Add 5–10% to your final number to be safe.
- Not accounting for overlap: when you break an irregular area into rectangles, the rectangles sometimes overlap. Subtract the overlap. Or use a measuring app (Google Maps' distance tool, for example) to get the area directly.
- Wrong depth units: depth must be in the same units as length and width. If you measure length and width in feet, depth must be in feet (4 inches = 0.333 feet). The calculator handles this if you enter depth in inches.
