Direct unit pairs (no density needed)
- Cubic feet to cubic yards — 27 ft³ per yd³. The most common conversion.
- Cubic yards to cubic feet — reverse of the above.
Density-dependent (tons)
- Cubic yards to tons — depends on material. Gravel = 1.42 t/yd³, concrete = 2.025 t/yd³.
- Tons to cubic yards — reverse, same material dependency.
Depth-dependent (square feet ↔ volume)
- Square feet to cubic yards — needs depth.
- Cubic feet to square feet — needs depth.

Common mistakes
- Forgetting which units are which: a cubic yard is a volume, a ton is a mass. You can't convert between them without knowing the material's density.
- Confusing cubic and square: a square foot is an area, a cubic foot is a volume. You need a depth to convert between them.
- Using the wrong gallon: the US liquid gallon (3.785 L) is different from the US dry gallon (4.405 L) and the Imperial gallon (4.546 L). All conversions on this site use the US liquid gallon.
